Discounted Airline Tickets

By Bobby Ivie

In spite of what advertisers want you to believe, there is not a solitary travel site on the Internet that always gets you the lowest prices for airfare.  The same thing goes for hotels and car rentals.  It is up to the traveler to check rates available at each site and compare them to make sure they are getting the best deal.  After reading this article, you will have a better idea of some things to keep in mind while you are searching for travel discounts.

The first thing you should do is plan well ahead and start checking the prices before you intend to make your purchase.  Prices and fares fluctuate and change depending on consumer demand.  Airlines, hotels and car rental companies normally set their rates in advance by predicting what the demand is going to be at that particular time.  Obviously some seasons bear more travel than others.

The closer to those times get, the more accurately the airlines, etc. are able to predict the volume of travel; which most of the time means a price hike. Yet sometimes, it lead to them lowering fares and fees and giving even deeper discounts.  Weekends, the summer months and the holidays are almost always going to to be the most expensive time to travel, so try to avoid these times if you're looking for discounts.

The next step, as you get closer to actually buying your tickets, is to use at least 3 of the well known discount travel sites online.  You will want to compare their fares on many different levels.  Most of them offer package deals that include the airline tickets, hotel and car.  It may be better to make reservations for these separately.  Be sure you explore their offered packages, but also do not be afraid of using one service for their airline rates, another for their lower hotel rates, and going right to to the car rental company for the best car rental deal.

Always check to see if any of your tickets or reservations have restictions on them, or what it will cost to change your plans if need be.  Especially for airline tickets, restricted and non-refundable fares are almost always cheaper, but can end up costing you more should unexpected circumstances arise.  Getting stuck with a discounted ticket you cannot use is not a very good way of saving money.

Do not accidentally outsmart yourself by trying to outsmart the airlines.  As many have found out, it is sometimes cheaper to buy a ticket for a popular destination that has a layover or connecting flight at the destination of your choice.  For example, it is cheaper to fly from Boston to Orlando with a connecting flight in Atlanta than flying from Boston to Atlanta.  The airlines quickly caught on to this little trick, and many of them will cancel all subsequent tickets if the passenger decides to take the detour in Atlanta and is not on the plane to Orlando.

One more thing to keep in mind, especially for vacationers, is that the lowest price does not always provide the best solution.  You are on vacation to relax and enjoy, and adding undo stress to your vacation by taking less than desirable accommodations for the sake of saving a few bucks is not a real good idea.  You want to make sure you get the best prices possible for your vacation, but at the same time, you have to keep it as a vacation you will want to take and be able to enjoy.
