Airline Security
by Bobby Ivie
Due to recent issues regarding the safety of travelers and personnel of airline flights, there have been some tight security measures enforced for people involved in air. It is very important that people know the security rules of the flights and what items are permitted and not permitted on North American flights. We will be going over some of the safety rules and requirements enforced by the U.S. Government that they enforce in order to prevent any acts of terrorism on airplanes and to ensure the safety of all people on the flights.
When boarding a flight, you may carry various liquids, aerosols, and gels on the plane in carry-on standard luggage. There are a few exceptions concerning these items, like medications, infant formula, and breast milk. All other items of this nature must meet the following regulations and guidelines:
- All containers holding the above-mentioned products must be three ounces or smaller, there are absolutely no exceptions.
- All of the items must be placed in a see throught quart-size plastic bag with a zipper closure.
- When you reach the x-ray screening machine, you must take this bag out to allow it to be properly examined prior to boarding the aircraft.
Some items do not require a limitation. Here is the list of specifications regarding these items:
- If a baby is traveling that uses stored formula or breast milk, it is permissible to bring these items aboard with no restrictions.
- Prescriptions and other forms of medications are allowed with no restrictions.
- Liquids that is necessary as part of a person’s medical condition is allowed on aircraft carriers.
- You are permitted to bring cosmetic and personal hygiene items aboard an aircraft.
- You are also allowed to bring cuticle cutters, eyeglass repair tools, and eyelash curlers aboard flights.
Sharp objects are not permitted on flights. Some of the items that are prohibited on aircraft include:
- Various shapes and forms of box cutters
- Ice axes and ice picks
- There are absolutely no knifes unless they are butter knives or plastic knifes
- No types of meat cleavers are allowed whatsoever
- Safety razors are allowed on flights, but no other type of razor blade is permitted
- Absolutely no sabers or swords are allowed on flights.
In addition to the above listed items, there are to be no flammable items allowed on flights. Some of the items that are flammable that are not allowed on flights are as follows:
- No lighters are allowed on flights unless they contain no lighter fluid
- No fuels are allowed on flights
- There is to be no gasoline in luggage as it is not allowed on flights
- No type of fuel or gasoline torch is permitted on airliners
- No matches are allowed (safety matches are okay at this time)
- No paint thinners or other substances are allowed on flights
For any other items that you may have that you are not certain if it is allowed on a flight or not, please contact the airlines that you will be flying with. All of them (at least those that are U.S. based) have a list of do's and don'ts, so be sure to check for updates before traveling.
